In the present study seven diverse genotypes of black gram werecrossed in diallel fashion excluding reciprocals. Seven parents and their 21 F1 generations were raised in randomized block design with three replications during rabi 2008 (E1) and kharif, 2009 (E2). The best specific combiner for seed yield per plant was PKV U-15 x IPU 02–33 and COBG 653 X Udid No.55. Hence, these two crosses were considered as superior for recombination breeding based on SCA effects. Hybrid PKV U-15 x IPU 02–33, COBG 653 x Udid No.55, COBG 653 x PKV U-15 and IPU 02–33 x KU 96-3 were found to be best hybrid combinations showing high SCA for number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant and seed yield. Among 7 parents, Udid No.55 showed maximum GCA effect and proved to be best general combiner. It showed maximum GCAeffect for number of branches, number of pods per cluster, number of pods per plant, and seed yield. Hence, these parents were considered as superior for recombination breeding based on GCAeffects.
