Specific combining ability for yield and yield attributing traits in rice hybrids

Abstract

Eight cross combinations exhibited high SCA (Specific Combining Ability) effects for grain yield per plant. Among these crosses, specific combining ability revealed the potentiality of IR-68897A x KMR3, IR-58025A x IR-10198 and IR-79156A x IR-72 hybrids for grain yield. These crosses were found to involve at least one parent with high GCA (General Combining Ability) effect and other parents having either high or low GCA effect indicating the involvement of additive as well as non-additive gene action. These hybrids were observed to be semi-tall and medium duration with high grain number and spikelet fertility percentage, suitable for upland eco-system. Performance of these hybrids, however, needs to be tested over seasons and locations, prior to commercial exploitation.
