The study was undertaken to find out the cause of increasing vegetable cultivation practice, in place of boro rice, in Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal. High cost of fertilizers and pesticides, followed by, increasing cost of irrigation and lack of marketing facility were found as the severe constraining factors. Whereas availability of nearby market, lesser irrigation requirement than rice and availability of higher quality seed of vegetables as compared to that of rice were the main reasons behind the shift towards vegetable cultivation in the study area.
