The plant growth characters of brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) viz plantheight, number of leaves, number of branches and total dry matter accumulation were higher in weed free check, while lowest in case of un-weeded control. Among the herbicide treatments, pendimethalin @ 1.5 kg a.i. ha−1 was very effective and increased all these parameters followed by pendimethalin @ 1.0 kg a.i. ba−1 and alachlor @ 1.5 kg a.i. ha−1. Total chlorophyll content and nitrate reductase activity were significantly higher in weed free check and lower in un-weeded control. Among the herbicide treatments, pendimethalin @ 1.5 and 1.0 kg a.i. ha−1 and alachlor @ 1.5 kg a.i. ha−1 significantly increased the chlorophyll content and nitrate reductase activity as compared to un-weeded control.
