Abstract

The transmission of cowpea mild mottle virus (CPMMV) through the seeds was studied.The virus was found to be seed-borne to the extent of 11.5 to 17.6 per centin dried mature seeds while it was 22.5 per cent in mature wet seeds.The virus was detected in all parts of the pods. The viruses in green pod parts were comparatively more infective than those in ripened pod parts. Presence of virus was detected in seed coat and seed cotyledons at all maturity stages, but the virus could not be recovered from embryos. The at all infectivity of virus was maximum in cotyledons while minimum in seed coat.The seed size was also affected by CPMMV infection and maximum virus transmission (24.6%) was noticed in small sized seeds.
