Genetic aspects of Alternaria leaf spot disease in sunflower (Helianthus annus L.)

Abstract

The genetic analysis of line x tester crosses forming 60 hybrids from 6 CMS lines and 10 restorers revealed that SCA variances were predominant for all eight quantitative traits studied indicating the role of non-additive genes. The parent CMS 17A was found to be good general combiner for seed yield and its attributing traits, oil yield and incidence of Alternaria leaf spot,while 852A x NDOL2 was a good combiner for oil content. The tester 6-D-1 P#2 exhibited high gca effect for yield attributing traits while, R-16 for incidence of Alternaria leaf spot and RHA-857 for oil content. The hybrids CMS 17A x R-16, CMS 234A x 6D-1 P#2 and CMS 302A x 6-D-1 recorded high and significant sca effects for seed and oil yield, while hybrids CMS 234Ax R-16, CMS 302A x 6-D-1 & (852Ax NDOL2) x VI-66 for oil content. The hybrids CMS 17A x RHA-857, (852A x NDOL2) x R-298(NB) & CMS 234A x 6-D-1 P#2 exhibited good sca effects for Alternaria leaf spot incidence. In all these crosses, one of the parents or both parents had low gca effects. However hybrid CMS 234A x 6-D-1 P#2 showed significant sca effects for both seed yield and Alternaria leaf spot incidence.
