Physico-chemical properties in soils from tuljapur tahsil of Osmanabad district

Abstract

The soils were classified as per the USDA classification based on soil characteristics into Vertisols, Inseptisols and Entisols. Among the 180 soil samples collected from 30 villages of Tuljapur tahsil during the year 2011–12, 34% were grouped as Vertisols, while 47 and 19% as Inceptisols and Entisols, respectively. These soil samples were analyzed for physico-chemical properties. Average particle density, bulk density and porosity of Vertisol soils were 2.44 gcc−1, 1.49 gcc−1 and 38.14%, Inseptisol soils were 2.44 gcc−1, 1.50 gcc−1 and 37.58% and Entisol soils were 2.41 gcc−1, 1.49 gcc−1 and 37.51% respectively. The soil colour was black, light brown and dark brown in Vertisol, Inseptisol and Entisol, respectively. The soils under study were alkaline in reaction, within permissible limit of electrical conductivity and moderately calcareous in nature. These soils contained low organic carbon.
