The present investigation was carried out during 2009–10 to 2010–11 at Department of Agricultural Botany, M K V. Parbhani in pigeonpea to estimate variable components, standard heterosis for seed yield and its components, and to isolate better crosses. To achieve this objective, 4 lines,23 testers, 92 crosses, along with one check BSMR736 and one promising hybrid ICPH-2671 were evaluated. The analysis of variance for various characters revealed that the variation among the genotypes was highly significant for most of the characters except for number of seed spod−1. The heterosis study revealed that phenomenon of heterosis was of general occurrence for most of the characters. The cross ICPA-2092 x ICP-12057 showed highest seed yield plant−1 and exhibited highest heterosis (71.79%) followed by ICPA-2092 x ICP-12320 (45.74%) over standard check BSMR 736.
