Abstract

Heterosis in mungbean was studied in a set of 8 x 8 diallel cross excluding reciprocals. The analysis of variance indicated highly significant differences among genotypes and hybrids for all the characters. The magnitude of heterosis varied from cross to cross for all the characters studied. High heterotic effects were observed for days to flowering, days to maturity, branches per plant, clusters per plant, pods per plant, pod length, seeds per pod, seed yield per plant and 100-seed weight. It was observed from the present study that heterotic response for seed yield per plant was mainly due to high heterotic response for branches per plant, clusters per plant, pods per plant, pod length and seeds per pod.
