Genetic variability studies in mungbean (Vigna Radiata L. Wilczek)

Abstract

The study was conducted to assess the magnitude of genetic variability and correlation coefficient among different yield components in mungbean. Seventeen genotypes of mungbean were grown in randomized block design with three replications at Research Farm, Department of Agricultural Botany, College of Agriculture, Parbhani. Significant variations were observed among the genotypes for all the characters studied. The highest genetic coefficient of variation was observed for number of pods per plants, followed by yield per plant, number of primary branches and plant height. The highest heritability was observed in number of primary branches (93.02%), followed by days to maturity (92.21%), 100 seed weight (92.00%), yield per plant (89.09%), number of pods per plants (86.09%), days to 50% flowering (73.43%), number of seeds per pod (70.00%), plant height (66.15%) and number of secondary branches (54.43%), while genetic advance was obtained highest in number of pod per plant (9.94%), followed by yield per plant (4.27%), plant height (3.63%), days to maturity (2.96%), days to 50% flowering (2.42%), number of primary branches (1.76%), number of seeds per pod(1.11%), number of secondary branches (0.98%) and 100 seed weight (0.94%). The yield per plant showed highly significant and positive association with plant height, number of primary branches, number of secondary branches, number of pod per plant, 100 seed weight and days to maturity. The number of pod per plant had high positive direct effect on yield per plant followed by days to maturity, number of primary branches, number of seeds per pod, and plant height. Therefore, days to maturity, number of primary branches, number of secondary branches, number of pods per plants, and 100 seed weight were identified to be the important characters which could be used in selection for yield of mungbean.
