Abstract

In vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the exopolysaccharide (EPS) extracted from Pseudomonas aeroginosa were investigated. Antimicrobial activity was determined using well diffusion methods with Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, while antioxidant properties were evaluated with the test of DPPH free radical. EPS showed antimicrobial activity against the strains tested, resulting into inhibitions zones ranging from 5 to 24 mm. Furthermore, EPS could reduce the free radical (DPPH) showing antioxidant activity, which was similar to that of ascorbic acid. Thus, the polysaccharides from Pseudomonas aeroginosa could be an alternative source of antioxidant and antimicrobial agents.
