Abstract

Six widely distributed common plant species reported to be used in skin ailments in India were selected. Crude ethanol extracts (45 % ) were tested for the presence of phytochemicals total protein, reducing sugar, alkaloids, anthranol glycosides, saponins, phenols, tannins, flavonoids and terpenoids. These were also tested by agar well diffusion bioassay against three dermatophytes -Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Microsporum audouinii. Highest inhibition of these pathogens was observed under the influence of Artemisia vulgaris extract, followed by Cassia alata and Justicia adhatoda.
