Observations on nesting, breeding and development of Prinia socialis (ashy priniaor wren-warbler) at Nanded (M.S.)

Present communication reports observations on nesting, breeding and development of Prinia socialis Wren-Warbler), a common bird from Nanded, M. S., Maharashtra India. The bird builds nest on Canna and Thuja plants at the height of about 60 to 100 cm. Nest site selection, nest construction and nesting behavior of the bird have been discussed. Four brick red glossy eggs per nest were observed. Both of the parents participated in nest building and taking care of the young ones. The incubation period of eggs was 12 to 13 days. Freshly emerged chicks were with almost transparent and naked skin but soon developed feathers, increased in size and completed further development in 9 to 10 days. Special features of parental care were recorded. Complex nesting behavior and parental care including employment of successful strategies for ensuring survival of maximum number of young ones was noticed.
