Carotenoids were extracted from aquatic resource, called as periphyton, using acetone-petroleum ether and ethanol as solvents. The pigments were identified employing the technique of paper chromatography, and used for assessing their antibacterial activity. Ethanolic extract of periphyton showed highest antibacterial activity against S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and E. coli. Highest zone of inhibition was observed against E.coli (18mm).
