Abstract

The proximate composition of different species varies greatly between and within the species depending upon several biological as well as environmental factors. Alteration in proximate composition of fish can serve as a good indicator of its habitat condition and nutritive value. Present study was undertaken to investigate proximate composition of seven fish species, commonly found in Golaghat, Assam, India. Highest lipid content was observed in Cirrhinus mrigala, followed by that in Heteropneustes fossilis, while lowest in Wallago attu. Protein content was higher in Anabas testudineus and Channa punctate, and lowest in Cirrhinus mrigala. Highest moisture and ash contents were found in Wallago attu and Labeo bata, respectively, while lowest in Cirrhinus mrigala and Anabas testudineus, respectively.
