Abstract

The objective of present study was to record red rot disease of sugarcane and to identify the pathogen associated with this disease. The results obtained revealed that diseased sugarcane leaves exhibit change in color from green-orange-yellow followed by drying. Infected sugarcane stalks became discolored and hollow. Some black fruiting bodies were observed on the rind and nodes, acidic smell arose after spitting open the infected stalk while the internal tissues were found to be red with intermixed transverse white spots. The disease is caused by Colletotrichum falcatum which is known as red rot disease, which reduces the yield.
