Abstract

The gut microbiota of human depends on various factors that govern gut ecosystem. In recent years, the excessive and continuous use of antibiotics is resulting into the resistance against them by gut microflora. Present investigation was undertaken to survey and study antibiotic- resistant Gram negative bacteria in the specimens of feces, gathered from general population in Baghdad, Iraq. Fifty human stool samples were collected for isolation of Gram negative bacteria from the gut. In all, 117 isolates from Enerobacteriaceae and Moraxellaceae families were obtained, which were subjected to antibiotics susceptibility test using 11 antibiotics. The isolates belonging to family Enerobacteriaceae consisted Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneuomniae and Citrobacter youngae; while those from family Moraxellaceae included Acinetobacter baumannii and Acinetobacter radioresistanse. Maximum resistance was observed against β-lactam Augmentin ( 91.4 % ) followed by Cephalosprens ( 52.4 %), Azithromycin ( 39.3 %), and Ciprofloxacin and Tetracycline (23 % each). It was observed that E. coli had highest level of resistance among the Enterobacteriaceae family. The isolates with higher antibiotics resistance, have high MDR and XDR percentage. The most frequently utilized medications having higher levels of resistance were Augmentin and cephalosporins. The large amount of Gram negative antibioticresistant bacteria found in the digestive systems of healthy people indicates that active surveillance and prevention of transmission must be implemented.
