Abstract

Metagenomics is a rapidly evolving field that enables the study of microbial communities in their natural habitats, through the direct analysis of eDNA. This technique provides a culture-independent approach, to study complex microbial ecosystems. The typical steps involved in metagenome analysis include environmental sample collection, total DNA extraction, preparation of eDNA libraries, library screening by shotgun sequencing or amplicon sequencing, and analysis of sequence data. Metagenomics has found numerous applications in diverse fields, such as environmental monitoring, bioremediation, drug discovery, and human health. Recent advances in sequencing technologies and bioinformatics tools have made metagenomics more accessible and cost-effective, leading to increased adoption and deeper insights into microbial ecology.
