Interleukin-27 is a cytokine which has been implicated in the hematopoiesis of acute myeloid leukemia. This study aims to evaluate the expression of this cytokine and investigate its role as biomarker. Forty five patients diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, as well as 42 healthy volunteers, were recruited and diagnosed. The diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia was confirmed by flow cytometry and immunohistochemically analysis ELISA technique was used to asses serum levels of interleukin-27 in patients and control group. The results showed a significant increase in serum levels of interleukin-27, white blood cells, blast cells and bone marrow in Acute Myeloid Leukemia patients compared to healthy control. There was significant decrease in hemoglobin and platelets in patients compared to healthy subjects. The results also showed a positive correlation for interleukin-27 with white blood cells, bone marrow cells, and blast cells. it was observed that the levels of interleukin-27, white blood cells and bone marrow cells were higher in males than those in females. the age group of patients from 40 to 80 years have higher levels of interleukin-27, white blood cells and bone marrow cells. The results also explained the effect of chemotherapy on biochemical parameters in patients who receive chemotherapy Present investigation demonstrated that IL27 could identify acute myeloid leukemia in patients and its over expression indicated a poor prognosis based on the simplicity and availability of their detection technique. Therefore, the inclusion of IL27 in the diagnosis of AML has been recommended.
