Edaphic green algae from north Maharashtra

Abstract

Algae occurring on soil are called edaphic algae. The spores of such algae germinate when the moisture is available. During present investigation total 27 edaphic green algae were reported, which included unicellular as well as filamentous taxa belonging to orders Ulotrichales, Oedogoniales, Chaetophorales and Zygnemales. The genera like Hormidium, Stichococcus , Oedogonium, Zygnema, Spirogyra, Sirocladium, Sirogonium, Closterium, Euastrum, Penium, Cosmarium were prominent, while Geminella, Heterotrichopsis, Psephonema, Fritschiella and Pleurococcus were reported for the first time from North Maharashtra.
