Heavy metals in water samples of kot DAM - Seasonal variation

Abstract

Present study was undertaken to observe seasonal variation and environmental implications of heavy metals in water samples of Kot Dam, Rajasthan, during July 2021 to June 2023. The concentrations of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) were analyzed for this purpose using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). The concentrations of Fe, Mn, and Zn were maximum during monsoon season, which has been attributed to water runoff from nearby areas. The Heavy Metal Pollution Index (HPI) indicated significant seasonal variations, with average HPI values of 8.98 for 2021–22 and 9.45 for 2022–23, suggesting a decline in water quality. It has been realised that continuous monitoring and watershed management strategies are required to reduce heavy metal pollution of Dam water.
