The tree species growing along Narmada River, Gujarat were assessed for the estimation of their carbon stocks and carbon dioxide sequestration potential. Total 357 trees belonging to 27 species were analysed for estimating total biomass. It was observed that the dominant species like Tectona grandis, Butea monosperma, and Terminalia anogeissiana stored highest carbon dioxide. Strong correlation existed between carbon sequestration and bio-physical measurements of trees e.g. Girth at breast height (GBH), basal area and tree density. The finding emphasised significant role of riparian area in soil conservation and reforestation programs.
