Effect of Shodhana on Phytochemical Nature of Datura Metel Linn. Seeds

The effect of traditional ayurvedic cleaning method “ Shodhana “,on detoxification of Datura metel Linn, a medicinal plant, was studied. For this purpose the seeds were subjected to the Shodhana process using cow's urine and milk. Reduction in alkaloids, phenols, proteins, saponins, and tannins in the seeds treated with Shodhita was observed, which was associated with decrease in moisture, ash and water-soluble extractives contents. It was concluded that Shodhana successfully lowered the amount of alkaloids in Datura seeds, which may reduce its toxicity.
