Abstract

Achyranthes aspera L. is one of the popular medicinal plants in Indian traditions and folk medicine. Since long, it is being used to treat a variety of diseases. In the present study, Achyranthes aspera has been studied for their male antifertility activity. For this purpose, the animals were treated with powdered drug sample of Apamarga kshara (Alkaline ayurvedic medicine prepared from Achyranthes aspera) @ 1g/kg/day for 7 days, 14 days, 21 days, 30 days and 45 days respectively. Histological studies revealed that administration of Apmarga kshara of whole plant of Achyranthes aspera caused degerneration of seminal vesicle and prostate gland. As a result of this seminal vesicle and prostate secretions were blocked.
