Diversity and Relative Abundance of Insect Pollinators in Sorghum Bicolor L Agrofield at Latur District of Maharashtra State

Abstract

Various insect pollinators were observed visiting sorghum crop during flowering period. A survey of insect pollinators associated with sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) was conducted during February 2022 and 2024, at an agricultural farm in Latur district, Maharashtra. Total 24 insect species were observed visiting sorghum flowers. Among these, 5 species belonged to Diptera, 1 each to Coleoptera, Dermaptera, and Lepidoptera and 16 to Hymenoptera. Specially during flowering period, several Diptera and Hymenopteran species were observed which included Syrphus spp Apis florea, Apis cerana and Trigona iridipennis. Highest number of pollinators were found to be visiting sorghum flowers. between 9:00 AM and 12:00 AM.
