Abstract

Passiflora edulis, commonly known as passion fruit, encompasses two primary subspecies: Passiflora edulis f. Edulis (purple passion fruit) and Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa (yellow passion fruit). Both subspecies are cultivated for their aromatic fruits. This systematic review aims to consolidate current research on the botanical features, phytochemical composition, pharmacological properties, nutritional composition, pharmacological uses and therapeutic potential of P. edulis. A comprehensive analysis of in vitro and in vivo studies highlights its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antidepressants, and antimicrobial activities.
