Oxidative stress is most common among the patients with diabetes mellitus. Present study was undertaken to evaluate potential of Nityanand rasa (NR) in controlling oxidative stress and reducing diabetes. For this purpose, aqueous and methanol extracts of NR were tested for antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-diabetic properties. Antioxidant potential was assessed using free radical quenching assay and measurement of total phenolic content; antimicrobial activity against E. coli was tested using well diffusion method while α-glucosidase suppression assay was performed to assess anti-diabetic potential. The results obtained indicated that aqueous extract of NR was rich in phenolic compounds with significant anti-diabetic activity, while methanol extract showed strong DPPH free radical scavenging and antimicrobial activities. Aqueous extracts of NR failed to show antimicrobial activity against E. coli.
