Antimicrobial Resistance in Proteus mirabilis Isolates

Abstract

Present study deals with antibiotic susceptibility profiles and multidrug resistance (MDR) among Proteus mirabilis isolates obtained from the patients with catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) in Chandrapur district, Maharashtra, India. For this purpose, a study against six antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, cefoperazone, tetracycline, cefotaxime, and ampicillin) was undertaken. The results obtained showed variation in sensitivity. Ampicillin showed highest activity, and tetracycline and ciprofloxacin lowest. Around 85 % of the isolates were found to be multidrug resistant. They were resistant to more than three antibiotics. Complex resistance patterns were illustrated through heatmap and Venn diagrams which included co-resistance to ciprofloxacin, cefotaxime, and tetracycline. Higher prevalence of MDR in P. mirabilis may create difficulties in the treatment and management of patients. There is a need for integrated Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), surveillance, rational use of antibiotics, and effective strategies to face multidrug resistance for protecting public health.
