Phytochemical Screening of Some Oilseed Cakes

Abstract

Cold-pressed oilseed cakes are nutrient-rich agro-industrial by-products that retain a substantial fraction of bioactive constituents and residual oil, making them suitable for valorization. Present study reports comparative phytochemical characters of cold-pressed cakes obtained from groundnut (Arachis hypogaea, GOC), sesame (Sesamum indicum, SOC), and coconut (Cocos nucifera, COC). Proximate analysis showed comparable moisture content (10.84–11.30%) across the three cakes, while ash content was highest in COC (8.93 ± 0.25%) followed by SOC (5.36 ± 0.19%) and GOC (4.47 ± 0.21%). Qualitative phytochemical screening of ethanolic extracts confirmed presence of alkaloids, proteins, carbohydrates, phenolics, tannins, and glycosides in all the three samples; however, flavonoids were detected exclusively in SOC. Total phenolic content (TPC) was highest in SOC (0.327 mg GAE/g ) followed by GOC (0.201 mg GAE/g); and COC (0.166 mg GAE/g). These findings support the use of these oilseed cakes as sustainable sources of animal feed.
