Prevalence of Hypertension Among Meitei Residents of Batahghuli, Kamrup Metropolitan District, Assam

Present study reports prevalence of hypertension and its association with anthropometric variables among Meitei adults residing in Kamrup Metro district, Assam. A total of 200 adults (99 males and 101 females) aged 18-84 years were studied in the month of May 2025. Blood pressure of each individual was measured using a mercury sphygmomanometer and the population was classified according to the JNC-V (Fifth Report of the Joint National Committee) guidelines, while anthropometric variables including height, weight, and BMI were assessed using standard techniques and the observations were categorized following WHO Asian classification. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS. The overall prevalence of hypertension was found to be 19 %, with a higher prevalence among males (25.25%) compared to females (12.87%). Significant positive associations were observed between blood pressure, age, body weight, and BMI. The study highlighted increasing age and body adiposity as important factors associated with hypertension and emphasizes the need for early screening and preventive health interventions.
