In case of sugarcane, varietal response was observed for initiation and morphology of callus. Variety Co. 7714 induced early callus followed by Co 671 and Co. 86032. Days required for callus initiation were inversely related to the concentration of 2, 4-D in all the three varieties. From 8 to 12 days were required for callus initiation. Callus was compact, soft and creamy white in Co. 671. It was compact, soft and pale yellow in case of Co 86032 whereas friable, loose and whitish in Co. 7714. The concentration of 2, 4-D at 3mg/l was most effective for early callusing in all the varieties.
