Abstract

A total of 14 species of Streptomyces were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of Casuarina equisetifolia L. from different localities in India. Out of these few species were tested for antagonism against phytopathogenic bacteria and fungi. Streptomyces chattanoogensis, S. violaceochromogenes and S. olivaciscleroticus inhibited growth of Bacillus subtilis; S. chattanoogenis of B. subtilis and E. coli while S. olivaciscleroticus that of Xanthomonas citri. All of them inhibited the growth of Fusarium oxysporum, a phytopathogen.
