Diversity of Desmids at Jalgaon, North Maharashtra

The present report deals with study of diversity of Desmids from different sites of Jalgaon viz. Hartala lake, Velhala lake, Tapti river, Waghoor river at monthly intervals from October 1998 to September 2000. Twenty five species belonging to the genera Closterium, Cosmarium, Euastrum and Pleurotaenium of family Desmidiaceae were recorded for the first time from this region. Maximum population of Cosmarium was recorded in the month of May while Cosmarium pseudoconnatum and Cosmarium obtusatum were dominant during winter. Closterium sp. flourished well between February to June. Euastrum and Pleurotaenium were rarely observed.
