Assessment of Seed Quality in F7 Interspecific Progenies of Pigeonpea [Cajanus Cajan (L.)] Millspaugh

Abstract

Physical characteristics of eighty one inter-specific progenies (F7) derived from the parents ICPL84023, PA134 and UPAS120 and wild species viz. Cajanus scarabaoeides, C.acutifolius and C.cajanifolius were studied. Highest 100 seed weight (8.12 g) was recorded in the progeny of PA134×C.scarabaeoides. Highest value for 100seed volume (8.04 ml) was reported in ICPL84023 ×C. acutifolius. High seed density (1.21 g/ml) was recorded in PA134 × C.acutifolius. Maximum hydration capacity (7.51g) was noted in PA134 × C.acutifolius followed by high hydration index (1.06g) inICPL84023 ×C.scarabaeoides. Swellingcapacity (11.84ml) wasaccounted in the progeny of UPAS120 × C. scarabaeoides, while swelling index (1.79 ml) was maximum in UPAS120 × C. cajanifolius. High grain hardness(19.15 kg) wasnoted in UPAS120 × C. cajanifolius. Asignificant positive correlation was observed between 100 seed weight and density (r = 0.65), whereas grain hardness showed negative significant correlationwith 100 seed volume (r = -0.27) and hydration index (r = -0.24).
