Abstract

Fruits of Myristica fragrans Houtt (Nutmeg), collected from two different localities, were subjected to hydro-distillation and the oil obtained was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Both the oils were comparable in term of their terpenes, terpene alcohols and phenolic ethers. The major constituents identified in the oil of nutmeg collected from North East were a-limonene (1.51%), m-cymene (4.03%), Terpineol (23.39%), Safrole (13.23%), Isohomogenol (5.14%) and Myristicin (1.33%), while the oil from Kerala contained a-pinene (15.21%), Sabinene (38.79%), Limonene (4.51%), Terpineol (4.15%), Safrole (6.34%) and Myristicin (6.15%) as major constituents.
