The present study was conducted to determine resistance amongst urinary pathogens in Mizoram, a North Eastern state of India. Out of 130 samples collected, 81 samples showed presence of bacteria. Among them Escherichia coli (27.2%) was found to be most common pathogen, followed by Proteus sp. (22.2%), Klebsiella sp. (14.8%), and Staphylococci sp. (7.4%). Sensitivity of these pathogens was tested against cefuroxime, lomefloxacin, amoxycillin/clavulanic acid, nalidixic acid, norfloxacin, cephotaxime, ciprofloxacin, gatifloxacin, nitrofurantoin, amikacin, meropenem and imipenem. Multi drug resistance was observed in 56.7% uropathogens. Among these pathogens¸ E. coli (22.2%), Proteus sp. (16%), Klebsiella sp. (7.4%), Staphylococcus sp. (6.2%) and Enterococci sp. (4.9%) showed resistance. All isolates showed 76.54% resistance to cefuroxime, 62.96% each to lomefloxacin and cephotaxime, 59.26% to ciprofloxacin, 54.32% to norfloxacin, 49.4% to amoxyclav and 48.2% to gatifloxacin. However they were not resistant to Meropenem and Imipenem. Thus multi drug resistance was common among the uropathogens in Aizawl, which warrants proper diagnosis and cautious use of antibiotics in the treatment of urinary tract infections.
