Performance of maize (Zea mays L.) in intercropping systems at different fertility levels

Abstract

Lentil (Lens culinaris) and pea (Pisum sativum) were cultivated as intercrops in winter maize (Zea mays L.) during the rabi season of 2007–08 and 2008–09, to study growth and yield of maize under the influence of intercropping and fertilizer application. Inclusion of legumes (pea or lentil) as intercrops enhanced plant height and dry matter accumulation in maize + peasintercropping system. The yield attributes viz cobs/plant, grains/cob, cob weight and 100-grain weight were not significantly influenced but increased due to inclusion of legumes in intercropping system. Maize + peas recorded higher grain and Stover yields of maize, as compared to that in maize + lentil intercropping system. Sole pea and lentil recorded higher grain and straw yields, as compared to their intercrops. The maize equivalent yields of maize + peas and maize + lentil intercropping systems were at par but significantly superior to their sole cropping. Maize + peas proved significantly better and remained at par with maize+lentil intercropping system. Among the fertility levels 100% RDF along with 12.5% FYM and vermicompost recorded significantly superior maize equivalent yield.
