Identification of multiple disease resistant lines in okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) moench)

Abstract

The study was undertaken to investigate disease resistance of parents and the hybrids obtained by 10 x 10 full diallel method, involving ten double cross derived inbred lines of okra. The ninety F1 s and their parents along with checks were planted in a Simple Lattice Design with two replications during kharif season of 2010–11 for diallel analysis, however, for disease screening only 59 genotypes (45 hybrids, 10 parents and 4 checks) were used as there was little indirect and reciprocal crosses. Each entry was sown at Main Agricultural Research Station, Dharwad. The intensity of yellow vein mosaic virus (YVMV), Alternaria leaf spot (ALS) and powdery mildew (PM) were recorded. Out of 59 genotypes screened, none of them were found immune. Moderately resistant entries were Line 2 and 2 × 4 for YVMV, ALS and PM. Crosses 2 × 37, 12 × 37, 13 × 16, 13 × 18 and 16 × 22 were compound disease resistant against Alternaria leaf spot and powdery mildew.
