This study was conducted in two villages of Block Hastinapur, District Meerut (U.P.) during 2011 through survey interview method. In this study sixty lactating mothers were selected. The present study clearly indicated that lactating mother’s consumption of cereals was 286 g./day instead of balance diet which is 98.330/0 ofthe average, similarly pulse comsumption was only 32.80 g./day which is 68.33% of the average recommended quantity, consumption of Milk and milk products is only 102.86 g./day which is less than recommended dietary allowance.
Special food items such as Lahasun, Pyaj ki sabji, Pat, Harira, Nishastat/Chhoka, Dasmularista, dry fruits, fish/egg, Loki, Mong dal, Papeta ki sabji, is provided to the mothers after delivery. 90% respondents said that it increases the strength, gives relief from pain and enhances milk secretion. Study reveals that more than 90% lactating women avoided sour food items and Urd dal, Rajma, Arbi, Kathal, Kela, Brinjal, Chana sabut, Amrood and Poi saga because the said items are heavy in nature cause coughings, difficult to digest and create acidic/gas problems.
