Abstract

In search of possibilities of organic farming in Meghalaya a survey based study was conducted by the directorate during 2010–11. In a randomly selected sample of four districts i.e. Jowali, Reboi, East Khasi Hills and West Khasi Hills it was found that 61.4% farmers practice organic agriculture, while rest 38.6% farmers follow chemical agriculture. Available data indicate that inorganic agriculture had edge over organic agriculture in terms for production. The net benefit from rice and maize crops reported to be Rs. 23240 and Rs. 1686/ha under organic culture as against Rs. 17062 and Rs. 17050/ha observed under inorganic culture of these crops respectively. Conclusively, ample opportunities in Meghalaya for organic agriculture were observed.
