Abstract

Performance of five seasonal rabi crops viz., Isabgol, cumin, fenugreek, asaliya, taramira was tested under Dichrostachys nutans and Leucaena leucocephala based agroforestry system at Agricultural Research Station, Keshwana, Jalore (Rajasthan). Woody perennials were planted at 5.0m x 1.0m spacing. Seasonal crops were sown between two rows of woody perennials.

Dichrostachys nutans attained a plant height of 280 em and provided 100.61q/ha green fodder leaves and 180.64 q/ha fuel wood with 93.50% survival after 8 years of plantation. However, Leucaena leucocephala attained a height of (498 cm with 71.24q green fodder leaves and 201.56 q/ha fuel wood with 86.88% survival after 6 year. Higher survival of D. nutans indicates its better tolerance and suitability to arid environment. However, L. leucocephala provided better plant height, collar diameter and fuel wood production than D. nutans revealed its fast growing nature.

Seed yield of all five intercrops recorded under agroforestry system was found lower than the open field. The levels of yield reduction of seasonal crops were found higher under L. leucocephala based agroforestry system. Reduction in seed yield of seasonal intercrops varied between 42.82 to 77.73%. Minimum yield reduction was found in asaliya (Lepidium sativum) and maximum in fenugreek. Economical analysis revealed that Dichrostachys nutans + asaliyaj isabgol is a suitable combination for agroforestry system in arid zone.
