The study was conducted to probe the nutrition related factors associated with obesity among school age mentally challenged children. Children of three age groups viz 6–9 years, 10–12 years (boys) and 10–12 years (girls) were selected for the present investigation. Data on nutrient intake and physical activity were collected from parents & teachers at three intervals during study using 24 hours recall method and Knowledge-Attitude-Practices (KAP) questionnaii-e. There was a high prevalence of obesity in 6–9 years (47%) old children followed by 10–12 years boys (33%) and girls (20%). Intake of calories, protein, fats and calcium in chiluren of 6–9 years was higher than recommended dietary allowances (RDA) for Indians. Caloric intake was lower in 10–12 years boys and girls than RDA. High intake of fat rich diet coupled with low physical activities and psychologicala barriers lead to obesity in school age mentally challenged children.
