Plants are exposed to different types of environmental stress. Among these stresses, osmolyte production stress, in particular that due to drought and salinity, is the most serious problem that limits plant growth and crop productivity in agriculture. Generally, proline protects plants from abiotic stress through different processes, including adjustment of cellular water, detoxification of ROS, protection of membrane integrity, stabilization of proteins. On the other hand, stay green trait help in maintaining the longer photosynthesis duration by maintaining chlorophyll content which would result in better yield of crops. Present research was conducted to observe proline accumulation in twenty wheat varieties to screen better variety. All wheat varieties showed low level of proline except RAJ 3765 and K 7410 which showed highest level of accumulation of proline. Such result indicates that these wheat varieties can perform better under abiotic stress conditions such as drought, salt, high temperature etc.
