Abstract

Rhodium(III)Chloride catalyzed oxidation of some aromatic aldehydes by Diperiodatocuprate(III) (DPC) in aqueous alkaline medium has been studied spectrophotometrically at 414nm. The order in [DPC] is zero and one each in [Rh(III)] and [aldehyde]. No salt effect and [OH ] effect have been found on the rate of oxidation. The stoichiometric studies reveal that one mole of aldehyde consumes two moles of DPC giving the corresponding carboxylic acid as the reaction product. A direct reaction between Rh(III) and aldehyde to give product via hydride ion abstraction by Rh(III) has been proposed.
