Abstract

Rhodium(III) Chloride catalyzed oxidation of some aromatic ketones by Diperiodatocuprate(III) (DPC) in aqueous alkaline medium has been studied spectrophotometrically at 414nm. The order in [DPC] is zero and one each in [Rh(III)] and [ketone]. No salt effect and [OH ] effect have been found on the rate of oxidation. The stoichiometric studies reveal that one mole of substrate consumes two moles of DPC giving the corresponding carboxylic acid as the reaction product. A direct reaction between Rh(III) and substrate to give product has been proposed.
