Status of ICT infrastructure for computerisation of college library services in the state of assam: An barak valley, South Assam

The present paper is based on the preliminary survey of selected college libraries of Barak Valley of South Assam which have been Affiliated/Permitted to Assam University (A Central University), Silchar. The first part of the paper describes about a brief account of background information pertaining to college libraries located in Barak Valley of South Assam. The second part of the paper highlights the survey results of college libraries affiliated with Assam University, Silchar pertaining to the background status of college libraries, initiative taken by the college libraries for developing information infrastructure for ICT application in library and information activities, Internet facilities, collection development of printed as well as electronic resources, on-line databases and access to the e-journals available under UGC-INFONET Digital Library consortium and DELCON Programme by the library end users.

Besides that the role of INFLIBNET for making available the State of-the-Art Information Communication Technology expertise and extending manpower training to the College Librarians and other library professionals of the selected colleges affiliated under Assam University, Silchar for modernisation of library activities and services have also been discussed in brief. At the end some constraints for automation programme, suggestions and recommendation for automation and networkingof college libraries of Assam in general and college libraries available under Assam University in particular. The paper concluded with the role of INFLIBNET and other corporate sectors for helping college libraries for developing adequate ICT infrastructure of the college libraries of Barak Valley for accessing to electronic resources available under N-LIST Programme of AICTE-INFLIBNET and providing effective and efficient computerized library services to the faculty members and students.
