Abstract

The paper explores the challenges facing and strategies for the establishment of digitized institutional repositories in Nigeria. The paper traced the digitization efforts and development of Institutional Repositories (IRs) in Nigeria in the mid-eighties to the University of Jos. Issues such as high cost of digitization, intellectual property issues or copy right militating against the digitizing information resources were discussed. The paper offers ways out through the development of a digitization policy as well as training of librarians and information professionals in Nigeria in project management, metadata, digitization principles and practice.
