Abstract

The study is focused on assessing Library Services, using Library Statistics, in Nigerian academic institutions. The paper takes a cursory look at academic libraries as services-oriented Intellectual Knowledge Centres (IKC's) and how the services can be improved to satisfy the information needs of users. What is the significance of the Library Statistics? To what extent are the Library Services supporting the objective of the parent institutions in Nigeria? These are some of the pertinent questions the paper seeks to answer. Questionnaires, interviews and consultation of the existing Library Records (LR) and Library Statistics (LS) were combined as instruments to elicit necessary information from the respondents. Among others, findings showed that Library Statistics are veritable tools not only for assessing library performances but as well for fostering future improvements in operations and services. Recommendations capable of improving the situation were offered.
