Print vs Electronic sources of information: Usage among faculty members and students

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to know the computer literacy and to investigate the use of print and electronic resources by the faculty and students. It is also aimed to know the various problems faced by students and faculty in using the print and electronic resources and to know the reasons for not using electronic resources. A Total of 170 questionnaires were distributed among students and faculty. Out of which 107 duly filled questionnaires were returned. A structured questionnaire was used for the data collection and data have been analyzed using Google form. Print resources were used majority with 81.02% and e-resources was 76.4%.Majority of faculty and students were visit the library to read newspaper, to read subject books, to update knowledge and to take question paper sequentially. The study has demonstrated the high use of print resource (81.02%). Most of them used print and electronic resources on daily basis for various academic purposes. The results of the study have clear implications for computer literacy instruction in the context of accessing electronic resources. The study recommends that there is a need to conduct intensive training to acquire the essential search strategies for effective information retrieval. The findings of the study will be helpful to the librarians and authorities of the college to enhance the Internet bandwidth to increase the internet speed for effective and efficient use of electronic resources among the students.
