The real and imaginary parts of dielectric constant £’ and £" of soil of Alwar contaminated with crude oil are determined at different low levels of contamination. £’ and £" are measured by wave-guide cell method at a single microwave frequency 9.78 GHz and at constant temperature 33°C. In view of passive and active microwave remote sensing Microwave emissivity and radar backscattering coefficient of contaminated soil with crude oil is estimated by model calculations. It is observed that the horizontal component of emissivity (eh) decreases as percentage concentration of contamination of crude oil increases at all observation angles. The vertical component of emissivity (ev) decreases as percentage concentration of contamination for the observation angle up to 0° -60° then variation of (ev) at higher observation angle (« > 60°) shows quite different behavior. Further, the contamination effect on radar backscattering coefficient is not much significant for horizontal polarization. («0hh) increases slightly w.r.t contamination for all observation angle (0°-80°) while («0vv) increases slightly w.r.t contamination for all observation angle (0° -60°) then decreases for higher observation angles
